Generic Bactroban cream (Mupirocin)

Generic Bactroban cream is an antimicrobial ointment for nasal use. The drug on the basis of mupirocin is effective in curing infections of the nose caused by pathogens. The ointment is applied up to 3 times a day for 7-10 days.

The active component of Bactroban is calcium mupirocin. 1 g of the product contains 20 mg of the antibiotic.

Generic Bactroban cream is a nasal ointment. The white substance is placed in a soft aluminum tube with a volume of 3 ml. The kit includes a tip designed for easy insertion of the product into the nasal cavity.

The antimicrobial component is obtained by fermentation of Pseudomonas fluorescens. The ointment has an antibacterial and bactericidal effect.

Bactroban is a local antibiotic

The substance inhibits isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, disrupting protein production in pathogenic microbial cells. Mupirocin has a special chemical structure and has a unique principle of action. Therefore, the antibiotic does not form cross-resistance with other antimicrobial substances.

If you use properly, the probability of occurrence of resistant strains of microbes is insignificant. When applied to the nasal cavity with a small suppressive dose, the drug has a bacteriostatic effect, and if it is taken in large volume – it will have a bactericidal effect.

The vitro studies have shown that Mupirocin effectively fights the following pathogens

  • Staphylococcus epidermis or Staphylococcus aureus;
  • Haemophilus or Escherichia coli:
  • Pyogenic Streptococcus.

Drug application

Generic Bactroban cream is used externally, intranasally. The ointment is applied to the surface of the nostrils up to 3 times a day. The course of therapy is up to one week.

The instructions indicate that it is possible to apply an aseptic dressing. If necessary, the doctor extends the treatment time to 10 days.

Overdose

Ointment for external use does not cause symptoms of overdose. However, if you want to prevent the development of negative reactions, do not use the drug in a large dosage.

During gestation, Mupirocin is used very carefully due to insufficient information about the safety of using the drug. If the drug is prescribed for the treatment of cracked nipples, then the treated area should be thoroughly washed before breastfeeding.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and manage mechanisms

Since mupirocin is applied externally and absorbed into the systemic circulation in minimal amounts, the drug is not able to affect reactions such as memory or attention.

 Gram-negative bacteria show low sensitivity to Bactroban. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant to mupirocin

After nasal administration, mupirocin is found in the systemic circulation when used in premature or newborn children, without provoking negative reactions. The ointment is absorbed through the mucous membrane. About 1% of the dosage is excreted through the kidneys in the form of aluminum acid.

Indications for use

Generic Bactroban cream is prescribed to stop the infectious process in the nose, provoked by staphylococci. Also, the ointment is used to prevent infection with Staphylococcus aureus by patients who are on outpatient peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. The ointment is not used in case of intolerance to its components and at the age of less than 12 years.

Side effects

Negative reactions were studied in 12 studies involving 422 patients. Occasionally, Mupirocin provokes immune disorders.

The most common allergic symptoms are:

  • dryness, burning, tingling, itching, erythema in the area of application of the ointment;
  • anaphylactic shock;
  • nettle fever;
  • generalized rashes;
  • Quincke’s edema.

There may also be respiratory disorders, manifested by sneezing, pharyngitis, rhinitis, cough, nasal congestion. On the part of the NS, you may experience a headache, a disorder of taste sensations. Occasionally, if there is the prolonged use of the ointment, the growth of resistant microorganisms increases.

Compatibility with other drugs

If you want to prevent the appearance of negative reactions, Generic Bactroban cream should not be used together with other drugs. It is desirable that the time interval between the reception of the drugs should be 30 minutes. The combined reception of the antibiotic and other drugs can reduce the concentration of Mupirocin, which will worsen the effectiveness of treatment.

Due to insufficient absorption, the interaction of Bactroban with alcohol has not been studied. However, it is worth remembering that alcohol worsens the immune system, which can reduce the effect of the drug.

Special instructions

Generic Bactroban cream is prohibited for use in ophthalmic diseases. This may cause tearing or burning. Do not allow the product to get into the visual organs. If this happens, you should wash your eyes with water.

There is evidence of the occurrence of pseudomembranous colitis during treatment with ointment. Therefore, it is necessary to consider such a diagnosis in patients before prescribing an antibacterial agent.

Reviews and recommendations of doctors and patients

Reviews of doctors are reduced to the fact that Mupirocin is a powerful antimicrobial ointment. Therefore, it is often prescribed to eliminate nasal infections that are sensitive to Generic Bactroban cream.

Patient testimonials have reported that the Mupirocin ointment has an extensive range and effectively treats lesions of the nose caused by pathogenic microorganisms. The drug is used sparingly and has virtually no side effects. The shortcomings of the ointment are a small volume and high cost.
